StuffIt Expander 16 App Reviews
I was unable to choose a location to save the new file. The “Choose” button was blue but I was unable to click on it. It did not register the click of the mouse.
Same problem as the other comment. App is unusable. Trying to extract opens a box to select save location that does not allow to click any of the buttons at the bottom. I was able to find a workaround by maximizing the save location window and then the buttons were accessible, but I am not going to do this every time. I am removing this app.
Urgent Fix Needed
Let’s you navigate to desired location for extraction, but does not respond when tapping the trackpad or clicking the trackpad.
Trying to unpack a 7z file, nothing comes out. Say it finishes successfully. Other tools do it just fine. Sad to see this once great tool pretty useless now.

I downloaded this app to open files with a .rar suffix. I have an iMac running OS X 10.8.5. I dragged and dropped the .rar file onto the application tile on my desktop, and followed the prompts to select the target location. The expanded files appeared at that location, but in grey, so they were inaccessible. I then could not close the Stuffit windows and the application did not respond to "Quit," so I had to "Force Quit" the application. An irritating waste of time.
I have used Stuffit Expander for years but the pervious version (<16.0) has not been updated for a long time so I wasn’t sure about comaptibiltiy. I downloaded this after reading good reviews online. It is slow, has graphical glitches, and has annoying bugs. I was decompressing several RAR files and it first asks to specify the location of where to put the new file. It “freezes” there because the buttons in the window don’t work when clicked on. You can advance the window if you press “enter” on your keyboard though. I also checked the box to remember the file output location and it never does. I just want something fast that works seamlessly like the old version. With so many choices, why settle for buggy software? I’ll try the Unarchiver instead.
I was wary after reading the 2 negative reviews but I thought I would give it a try. This worked fine to extract the nearly 1gb rar file I downloaded from the internet. It expanded the archive quickly and I didnt experience any of the issues of the other commenters.
Only works on .sitx files
StuffIt Expander worked to open my .sitx archives, but it errored out when trying to open older .sit archives with the same “Implementation required for this operation is missing” that others have reported. Maybe 2.5 stars is more appropriate since it only did half the job?
Opened Zip file that Archive Utility couldn’t
Apple’s built-in archive opener gave me an “unable to open” error, but Stuffit handled it without a problem. Old but dependable :)
Complainers should stuff it!
Most of your modern technology experience depends on compression, and StuffIt was an early format for Mac. Far from “abandonware,” this is legacy maintenance. You downloaded Stuffit to expand a .zip or .rar file? Why? I am grateful for a recompile that might run on my M2 Mac in case I run into one of those old .sit files. Apple isn’t exactly interested in local archival storage for end users, either
Seems to work just fine for some SITs
I just used this on Sequoia 15.3 and it worked just fine for what I needed. It was a SIT archive from 2005 and it extracted without difficulty/errors/any extraordinary effort on my part.
Looks like abandonware
It's the only modern app that can expand proprietary StuffIt archive files (.sit, .sitx, .sea). Does it work? No. Any hope of an update? There hasn't been one since December 2020. Then is there a way to make this app work as-is? Almost every review reports the same error message: "Implementation required for this operation is missing". What does that mean? There's no telling. My guess is that the "missing implementation" is an obsolete version of macOS. So you need to find an old Mac (hopefully not so old that it lacks a USB port) that still boots up *and* has an old version of StuffIt Expander installed. Put your StuffIt file on a USB drive, plug it in, and use the old StuffIt Expander to "unstuff". Is there an easier alternative? You could swear at Smith Micro, trash the StuffIt file, and move on with your life.
Can’t access Stuffit files
The name of this software is “StuffIt Expander” but it can’t expand stuffit files, so this must be a payload for malware or something.
worthless
It won't open .sit files. Which is pretty much the only use of Stuffit Expander. I can open anything else with Mac OS anyway.
Stuffit Expander wont work on Stuiffit files LOL
This Stuffit Expander App can't even open .sit Stuffit files. How beyond dumb is that.
How does this not support .sit files?
This is a format that invented for Stuffit, how is this not supported.
Can't open any of my old .sit files
This app can't open any of my 30 old .sit files!
Fails to expand older files
Claims to expand Compact Pro files. When I tried, I got "Expansion failed -- Implementation required for this operation is missing." The error message isn't even meaningful.
Doesn't support their own files
Had some archived files in .sit format and this app won't decompress any of them! "Implementation required for this operation is missing." How do you not implement the purpose of your existence?
Doesn't open old stuffit files
What would I ever need Stuffit Expander for other than to open old .sit files... but it just says "Implementation required for this operation is missing."
Doesn't actually expand SIT archives
You had one job, and you failed - to expand StuffIt archives for all kinds of classic (pre-OSX) Mac software. Would give it 0 stars if I could.
Complete garbage
Doesn't work at all. I tried multiple .sit files, and this is all it does; "Expansion failed Implementation required for this operation is missing."
Useless
This app (the deluxe version) used to be my go to app for compressing and uncompressing files of all sorts. Now, it can't even uncompress it's own formats. Need to access that old documents folder you compressed years ago in .sea or .sit... their proprietary format...? Well, you're out of luck. They can't even work with themselves anymore. Wow. Look elsewhere for any other compression needs, and if you need .sea or .sit, then you need to find an older Mac to do it, sadly.
No support for original .sit format
"Expansion failed: Implementation required for this operation is missing" YOU HAD *ONE* JOB, STUFFIT. *ONE JOB*.
Lack of legacy SIT file support makes this useless
WTH?! How can this even use the name "StuffIt" and not support .sit files? If you aren't going to support then, publish a document documenting the file format so someone can write a tool that does.
Does not support MIME files
Tried to expand a couple of old MIME emails and all it says is: Expansion failed Implementation required for this operation is missing.
Doesn't expand older .sit files
Am unable to expand .sit files with app.
Implementation Missing
Many formats that worked in previous versions now just result in "implementation missing" errors. I'm not sure what the "'16" version actually does or can do.
Have multiple SIT files and it won't unstuff them
says "implementation missing" error message. WHY
Doesn't support SIT files
I can't extract SIT files, which is the only reason I downloaded this in the first place.
doesn't work for legacy files
The one reaon you're here is to open an old .sit archive. This app won't do that. Totally useless.
Cannot even handle Stuffit files!!!
Downloaded this because our stupid copier makes it's help files available as a binhexed stuffit file. (note to Ricoh...system nine was more than 25 years ago!) Ran it, dropped the .sit file on the icon and got "Expansion failed. Implementation required for this operation is missing" You had one job! would give this negative star rating if it were possible.
Worthless for legacy zip files
I've been a user StuffIt 1.0 back in the 68k Mac days. The app needs to support opening the legacy file format. Really really sad that it does not...
Doesn't do what it says it does
I attempted to drag and drop archives into it and it says "not a valid archive" for .toast files and "implementation required for this operation is missing" for .sit files. Seems all it can handle is .zip files. The app needs a major repair job.
SEA lost at sea
Would not open an .sea file. Gave an unusual dialog warning the resources were not available. Downloaded Unarchiver and got the archive open. Deleteing Stuffit Expander
It simply does not work
I cannot open .SIT files on any newer Mac, as in any mac since 2010. I have to use an old MacPro tower from 2009 running OS X 10.5 to expand .SIT files with Stuffit. I recommend using "The Unarchiver" from tha App store, it works just fine for .sit and .sitx and many other formats.
Can't open a .sit file from 2008 - why not?
Failed trying to open a software package from 2008, which is well within the Mac OS X era, this product is unable to open the .sit (Stuffit) file. Expansion failed "Implementation required for this operation is missing" is the specific error message. The least the vendor can do is document the .SIT internal format so another developer can develop a working expander.
Nikon bin
Won't open it. I need a windows computer to get some stuff done.
Doesn't Work
It fails to do the one job thats asked of it; cannot expand archive files?!?
"Expansion failed: implementation required...is missing"
Appreciate that it's free, but it doesn't work for me. However the app Unarchiver by MacPaw worked great. I have an old .SIT archive and after trying to unpack it errors out saying: "Expansion failed: implementation required for this operation is missing".
Fails to save any resource forks
I expanded a .sitx file and got mostly empty files - because the resource forks were not expanded! This makes the program completely useless to me.
the only program to open SITX files?
When I try to open SITX files with any other program (The unarchiver and Keka), they all said that all of my SITX files are corrupted. If SITX is a bad format, then why did you ever offer it? I probably lost tons of valuable data that I can never recover now! Thanks Smith Micro!
Useless
This software is useless. It doesn't open .sit files.
Useless
If it worked I'd give it more than one star. Every .sit file I try gives a "Expansion Failed. Implementation required for this operation is missing."
You had ONE JOB
Downloaded this to extract some ancient .sit files. I was met with a dialogue box titled "Expansion failed" and the text "Implementation required for this operation is missing." You had ONE JOB: extract StuffIt files! Ya done messed up!
Doesn't support their own format!
Tried to unpack some old StuffIt archives and this failed to do it. Try "The Unarchiver" instead. It actually supports .sit files.
Cannot open .sit files
StuffIt files are a legacy format, at best, so one would suppose the main use for this app would be to open really old archives. Unfortunately, it can’t even do that. When I dropped a couple of ~20 year old .sit archives into the app, all I got was, “Implementation required for this operation is missing.” That lack of functionality makes StuffIt Expander useless junk.
Does NOT extract .SIT files!
I originally downloaded this program to extract old .sit files for an Imac G3. This does not do that. If you are in the same boat as me. I have a solution! Use "the UnArchiver" It is a beautiful program. Extracts almost anything!
No legacy support
Was going through some old storage devices and have some old .sit files and it couldn't handle any of them. "Implementation required for this operation is missing."
Doesn't open its own format
Why do you get Stuffit Expander? To open SIT files, naturally. Guess what file format this doesn't work on?
Where is the SIT support?
I can't extract sit support and I want to do it. Can you implement support?
Can’t open old stuffit files
Used to be my favorite archive tool, but this product is worthless if it can’t open stuffit archives
Doesn't support its own format.
Crazy, came here to get the program because I like it and NEEDED it to uncompress .sit files. Which is their own format. However, they don't support it any longer either. Not sure who made that decision, but now I have to pull out an old mac to uncompress a file. Would have gladly paid for it, but not going to after they have left no other options available to me. Glad I didn't dump the old one yet.
Does not support legacy files
It does not support legacy versions of .SIT files. So why on earth would you download it??
Works great!
I had a zip file that was 10gb and the mac archive would not unzip it. I downloaded this and it unzipped it perfectly fine so I don't have to re-download it.
SIT
I downloaded this to expand a .SIT file. It won't do that, so 1 star rating.
